WOODY ALLEN: A DOCUMENTARY

By Allan Hunter

A film brimming with vintage archive footage

A film brimming with vintage archive footage. ROBERT B Weide’s very appealing film may not tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Woody but it does a sterling job of covering his career.

A lengthy, self-deprecating interview with Allen lies at the heart of a film brimming with vintage archive footage (including an anxious Allen in the boxing ring with a kangaroo) and illuminating interviews with Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, Mariel Hemingway and others.

Allen is endearing in his belief that any of his success has been a happy accident and that he has yet to make a great film that will stand the test of time.

Mia Farrow is a notable but hardly surprising absentee from a documentary that leaves you hungry to revisit personal favourites such as Manhattan and Broadway Danny Rose.
